Penang food hunt part 2

From Glow, we started our 7hr leisure walk. 1st stop – Lorong Selamat to check out the Aunty with red hat char kway teow @ Kafe Heng Huat. Indeed like what other bloggers say, she was feisty. The coffee shop was packed with patrons! IMG_9059.JPG

Opposite the Kafe, we found durian pulp tau sar peah, they say they are the only stall?! We also saw Hoe Peng, a Mee Koo shop. Mee Koo is steamed turtle bun similar to birthday buns (寿桃) without filling and heaps bigger, like a pillow. There was also a Szechuan restaurant beside it.

We continued our walk along Lorong Selamat and found this other coffee shop (KTG cafe). They have Lor bak (fried items, prawn fritters), Ko Ai prawn rolls and kueh kapit (love letters), then we tried the yummy stuffed otak chicken wings. Fried to order and it was crispy, spicy and shiok!

2nd stop – We continued on to Jalan Burma which is perpendicular to Lorong Selamat. Here we tried Ming Tai Xiang trishaw egg tart. They seemed to be very popular for their pastries, soy bean drink and herbal teas. They also have claypot dishes and steamed buns where dine in patrons were enjoying.

3rd stop – From Jalan Burma turning into Jalan Penang, we walked past the famous chendol stall beside Joo Hooi cafe. Then we approached Chowrasta market. There were different kinds of stuff ranging from toys, preserved fruits, ointments, necessities, road side stalls selling jewellery, knick knacks and coffee shops.

4th stop – We proceeded to Jalan Kuala Kangsar onto Lebuh Campbell, Jalan Sungai Ujung and onto Lebuh Chulia where we explored Yeng Keng Hotel with rich heritage.

Lebuh Chulia had many coffee shops selling roast meats and chicken rice. All of them were crowded especially Wai Kee (off Lebuh Chulia, just before Jalan Pintal Tali).

We then past Love Lane just off Lebuh Chulia. This lane houses wheelers cafe and Budan’s Brew Coffeebar.

5th stop – along Lehuh Chulia is Mugshot Cafe where we finally rested our feet. Mugshot was a nice cafe with a bakery. We ordered iced mocha and iced americano. After sweating heaps, Iced americano never tasted so good!

6th stop – Next, onto Lorong Chulia! Many cafes here like Townbikes for some kebab (chicken was quite tasty), Pit Stop, Coffee Atelier & The Alley (past Lorong Muda). Once we stepped into The Alley (5 Stewart Lane), the coffee aroma hit us. We went for some nice Choc mint frappe and pink guava frappe.

7th stop – We walked from Lebuh China to Lebuh Queen to Chai Diam Ma (in Hokkien) meaning sundry shop is a quaint cafe. There was even an art exhibition on the 2nd level. We had their set lunch which included a fresh lime drink and italian sausage spaghetti. Quite good food but the cafe was not air conditioned and there was no wifi.

8th stop – Then we proceeded to the heritage sites at Lebuh Armenian (we walked past Jalan Masjid Kapitan Keling). We saw some mosques, temples and wired artworks. There were also street stalls, and henna tattoo (which I did for RM5).

9th stop – Jalan Armenian led on to Jalan Pantai where we popped into China House. A very popular cafe/ bar (level 1) with art gallery and crafts (level 2).

Along Jalan Pantai towards Prangi Mall/ Kontar we saw more cafes and wired artworks.

10th stop – Onto Jalan Carnavon, we walked past Armenian Steet Heritage Hotel and Kedai Kopi Seng Thor. We headed to Ete cafe for some sweets. Ete cafe is owned by a Taiwanese lady trained at Le Cordon Bleu Patisserie. We only tried the mint blanc which was not fantastic. The cafe was so tiny and crowded, it was pretty uncomfy as there was a big group there.

11th stop – As it was such a hot day, we walked to Prangin Mall to seek refuge. Yes, for the air con. After exploring a few levels, we headed for some pork and innards porridge at Lorong Kampong Malabar. This placed called Hon Kei (near Ho ping coffee shop) was quite popular. Before 6.30pm, the restaurant was almost packed. This place is very near the popular Line Clear Nasi Kandar. We ordered the lor bak and minced pork and liver porridge which was quite light.

12th stop – On our way back to Glow, we stopped by the hawker opposite for some chee cheong fun (rice roll with chili and prawn paste) to conclude our journey.

    1. Thank you Sandhya. The local tourism board terms Malaysia as truly asia and it really is. With authentic food prepared by locals, nature parks and friendly locals, you’d enjoy yourself!

      Durian is the king of fruits and it is pungent. Its flesh is creamy and smooth. Some species have a bitter taste and some very sweet. I personally prefer the bitter ones. Don’t get me wrong they are still sweet but with a slight bitterness. Some find durians very offensive so you’ll either love it or hate it.

      Malaysian durians are good so you must try them at least once when you visit. You might like them!
